Action Call: “Break the Food Monopolies”

by Elizabeth Barrette on March 18, 2010

This alert about food monopolies crossed my desk recently.

Monsanto, Cargill and Smithfield…Oh My

Did you know that despite endless aisles of food in the grocery store, just a handful of companies decide what kind of food you can buy and how farmers can produce it? It’s true. Decades of bad farm policy and unchecked corporate mergers have driven out independent players, creating powerful agribusiness giants who control much of what ends up on our plate. Can you sign our petition to break the monopolies in the food system?

News: “Homes for Our Troops”

by Elizabeth Barrette on March 16, 2010

I was pleased to see this article about a charity that builds accessible houses for disabled veterans.  This is a wonderful way of thanking people for service to their country, when it has cost them so much.  It also helps them live productive and independent lives instead of becoming a burden on society. Community support can make such a big difference!

by Elizabeth Barrette on March 9, 2010

The movie Avatar has been a huge hit.  It’s full of messages about beauty, belonging, and balance — which are in short supply on Earth.  People are enchanted.  There are a lot of underlying messages that are getting missed, however.  Let’s take a look…

Action Call: “End Subsidies for Biomass Burning”

by Elizabeth Barrette on February 18, 2010

This alert crossed my desk recently, concerning the use of forest biomass as fuel.  To fight climate change, we should be planting more trees, not cutting them down to burn.

Action Call: “Protect Pine Martens”

by Elizabeth Barrette on February 13, 2010

This alert crossed my desk, regarding protection of pine martens and mature undisturbed forest as a habitat.  Many other creatures also require this type of habitat, so it is very valuable as a wildlife reserve.  Remember that trees help clean the air and soak up carbon, too, so they help keep the Earth healthy for us as well!

Action Call: “Close the Floodgates”

by Elizabeth Barrette on February 10, 2010

The recent Supreme Court ruling to give corporations the same free speech rights as human beings has put our democracy at risk by allowing big business to make unlimited campaign contributions to politicians who will favor corporations over voters.  Fortunately America has a system of “checks and balances” to prevent the government from getting out of hand.  We’re using those to fight the corporate takeover by pressuring Congress to pass a constitutional amendment restricting corporate contributions and enacting campaign finance reform.  Please help.
