Celebrate Human Rights Day

by Elizabeth Barrette on December 10, 2009

Today is Human Rights Day.  This holiday was established by the United Nations in hopes of creating a world where everyone enjoys a safe and dignified life.  For more information, visit the Bloggers Unite event page.

What Are Human Rights?

Human rights protect our personal integrity, safety, dignity, and survival.  We consider “civilized” those cultures that honor them and “barbaric” those cultures that violate them.

Read the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

What You Can Do to Help

1) Visit the Amnesty International site and read about their activism efforts. Make a donation if you can afford it.

2) Take part in the Human Rights Campaign.  This one specializes in sexuality/gender equality.

3) Human Rights Education Associates offers resources for teachers.  Feature human rights in a classroom today or talk about this topic with your children.

4) Inform yourself with Human Rights Watch.  Here you’ll find regular news updates on this topic.

5) Visit Change.org and sign some petitions.  Choose from causes such as Gay Rights, Immigration, and Women’s Rights.
