Celebrate “Happy at Work Action Day”

by Elizabeth Barrette on October 5, 2009

Most of us spend a majority of our time at work, whether we work at home or outside it.  Sometimes our jobs give us great satisfaction; other times, not so much.  This holiday, celebrated the first Monday in October, is dedicated to teaching people how to be happy at work. For more information, see the Bloggers Unite event page.

The Four Basic Rules

These activities are recommended on the home page for celebrating Happy at Work Action Day:

  1. Celebrate! Throw an office party.
  2. Reward a deserving co-worker or client.
  3. Reward yourself for a recent accomplishment.
  4. Take 5 minutes to reflect on the crazy beauty in your life.

Other Activities

Happy employees are healthier and more productive at work.  When employees (and employers, too!) are happy, everyone benefits.  There are many ways to increase happiness at work.  Here are some more possibilities to consider:
  1. Put some house plants in your office or other workspace.
  2. Encourage everyone to decorate their desk, cubicle, or other workspace with personal items such as photos, paperweights, and picture calendars.
  3. Start a program that combines mild physical motion with mental relaxation. Some popular examples include Yoga and Tai Chi.
  4. Establish a “book swap” location in a break room.  People can leave books, magazines, and other reading material there and pick up something new.

Yes. How we work and our attitudes toward our work are very important matters. We should bring enthusiasm and interest to our work.
