What Are Green Buildings?

by Elizabeth Barrette on March 11, 2009

Green buildings are structures built with Earth-friendly materials and techniques.  This makes them healthier for the environment, but also for people who live and work inside them.

Learning About Green Buildings

Various organizations define and promote green building techniques and plans.  The Environmental Protection Agency offers information on what green buildings are and why they’re important.  The U.S. Green Building Council focuses on sustainable building design and construction.  LEED certification recognizes several levels of environmental friendliness in buildings, but there are many other options too.

Green buildings use water and electricity efficiently, minimize pollution and waste, and protect the health of people and the environment.  Energy Star is one program dealing with energy efficiency.  Green building suppliers provide materials to minimize the environmental footprint.  A green building may even have a green roof with live plants!

Different types of buildings can be green.  Green homes are private residences.  In addition to using appropriate supplies, they are often smaller than average.  Green schools provide a healthy environment for children and teachers.  They demonstrate many principles of Earth-friendly building, useful in education.  Green office buildings use high-tech methods to create a profitable place to work.  They attract environmentally conscious companies.  The future may even bring skyfarms, buildings designed to provide urban agriculture.

Cities with the most green buildings include Los Angeles, CA; San Francisco, CA; and Houston, TX.  Such cities often rank among the best places to live, and score well on walkability and other environmental factors.

Supporting Green Construction

Surveys generally indicate public enthusiasm for green buildings.  Tools are available to find funding for green building projects.

The Green Building Initiative offers information and resources for promoting green construction.  Governments can join in promotion too.  The recent stimulus package includes substantial funding for green buildings.  Finally, you can help by contacting your elected officials to encourage them to support and fund green construction.
