How Walkable Is Your Town?

Many studies show that walking is good for you.  Like all human-powered transportation, it reduces demand for fossil fuels and thus lowers pollution.  In order to enjoy walking, it helps to dress properly and to walk in a pedestrian-friendly area.  Here are some resources to get you started.

Get Your Walk Score!

The Walk Score site helps you find a walkable place to live, where you can reach groceries, services, and entertainment nearby.  Type in an address to see local facilities and to get a “walk score” rating its walkability.  Learn what the scores mean and how they work.  Not happy with your results?  Read about America’s most walkable neighborhoods

Where Can You Walk?

Look around — there are many opportunities!  In some towns, it’s convenient to walk to work.  Online guides to routes include Trails.com and the Trails Database.  Most national parks also feature miles and miles of walking and hiking trails through scenic territory.  You might also enjoy reading the books The Lost Art of Walking: The History, Science, and Literature of PedestrianismThe Complete Guide to Walking, New and Revised: For Health, Weight Loss, and Fitness, or Walking the World’s Most Exceptional Trails.
